I’M A BIG KID NOW

scarf

I wore a scarf to work yesterday. It was awkward. I know, I know….”accessories make the outfit.”

Why is it that every time I try to step out of my box with a new accessory, I feel like the seven year old SMB playing dress-up?

A trendy necklace, bangle bracelets, above-mentioned scarf…they all make me feel like I’m pretending to be someone I’m not. Someone way cooler than me. And then I feel silly and take it off.

But not this time. This time I wore my scarf proudly. I strutted around like a dang supermodel. I was a grown-up. All day. I was ……dare I say it……almost chic. It felt good.

What do you wear to step out of your wardrobe box? What makes you feel like a grown-up? Or do you always feel like a grown-up because you are one? Surely I can’t be the only one who feels this way?

Hugs,
Smart Mouth Broad

I always wear trousers. I have been doing this for 30 years, but recently I wore a skirt, which felt awkwart on my bicycle. I really didn't feel happy, even if everybody said that it looked good. I am sure you can wear anything and always look great.

I don't do fashion. I would wear shorts and a tee shirt all year if I could!

I'm sort of with Otin - I don't wear make up, always pants and usually with flats, but every once in a while - I will dress up, put makeup on and even - yes, even wear heels!! I just don't feel right, though, it's totally out of my comfort zone.
And my veri word? Outtsi. lol

Well, this fall it seems to be scarves. I am completely comfortable wearing accessories and have about 10 scarves that I love. They make me feel all girly without having to wear ridiculous ruffles or a flower in my hair... HA!

Kind of old for fashion these days for I am too much into comfort but when I do it is heels--and dang those devils hurt.

I went to a school district function last week and I wore nice jeans, a nice blouse with an olive green wool blazer & boots.

I ran into the head of a non-profit I occasionally work for...she was stunned by my appearance...I am usually in work shorts and stained t-shirts with flip-flops (I don't want to ruin all my clothes!)

Out of my fashion comfort zone? Ha! That's easy, just getting dressed up and actually putting on full makeup!

The majority of the time, I only put on bare essentials so-called foundation; nothing else. The majority of the time, you'll find me in paint (or other chemicals) stained clothes because I'm obviously a messy painter. How can I get paint on my elbow when I'm using a small artist's brush?

Hooray for you getting out of your fashion comfort zone! Me, I'll stay with my bag lady look. Works for me.

I dress in all different ways depending on how I feel.

Being the nice guy that I am I ordered "GQ" mag from a kid who was doing a fundraiser and now I just drool over clothes I can't afford.

I've always been a little out of step. I make my own clothing and often re-make the patterns into something I like to wear.

Most of the time I wear long flowy things--even gardening. I know, it's a bit wierd, but I love it.

I've redesigned so many patterns--and now that I've been losing weight, I'm able to wear some of those dresses I made long ago.

I love long flowing scarves, but have a hard time wearing jewelry, except for earrings. Every now and then, though--I do break out of the box and wear a necklace or a bracelet.

I bet you looked gorgeous in your wonderful scarf.

I love this post. Cuz I do this a lot, buy trendy accessories and then think, "Aw, who am I kidding?"
But I'm getting better now. I'm realizing everyone else isn't in my head and they think I look just fine. Except my daughters; but they don't count. Better they don't see what I'm wearing or I'll really feel stupid.

Glad to see you back Smart Mouth! I am just getting back too and your precious blog expresses EXACTLY how I feel right now about blogging....love it but responsibilities are a callin. I am with most of your other fellow bloggers in that I dress casually almost every day. My work allows it and it's comfy for me. When I want to step out of my comfort zone it is with a funky hat and semi-hippie skirt and blouse and nice sandles. Not much!

These wrinkles on my face are what make me feel like a grownup. grrrr.......

p.s. I bought 3 new scarves yesterday. I love scarves but I've been wearing them a long time....off and on.

Heck, I dress up almost every day!! Itr's either a silk sari, a wrap, or a fine linen kurta over a skirt...always something. Winter, I love....heavy linen and wool wraps, silks, thick petticoats....divine :) Hey you've inspired a post for me....

I sometimes wear jewelry with big bright colored beads - and that is way out of my comfort zone. I usually don't make it the whole day thus explaining the drawer full of jangly beads in my desk drawer. I'm short so big necklaces (and so many of them are big) look like I've been playing in my grandmother's jewelry box.

I think I "grew up" in that sense when I began wearing white and bright colors sometime in my late 30s. I'd been brought up believing (thanks, Mom) that someone my "size" should stick to dark colors.

She'd probably be appalled at my extensive collection of neon-colored Crocs.

Ugg dress up. I cringe. Dress up is dark slacks, nice blouse with a necklace. I did once wear a scarf that someone had made for me and well.. after I got used to it, it wasn't half bad. (smiles). Blessings to you and yours. Love and Light, Nina P

I wear a scarf too. It is the accessory I drape over my regular clotes when daughter and I go to a play.

I'm so bad with the stuff that "makes the outfit." I suppose if I wear a necklace. Dangly earrings. Used to be high heels and a matching purse. Back when purses and your belt were supposed to match your shoes.

Oh, I know - makeup. Really special event - I put on blush.

Interesting post. I found scarves to be awkward and "always in the way" for me but love how women wear them. Then I go on my holiday and started using scarves - they are my thing now. Took me 64 years, not bad!

i never feel like i step out of my comfort zone..but that's because i always wear it like i mean it. you have to wear the style or it will wear you.

even if i don't feel confident i fake it and other people buy it. it's my secret little trick!

hahaha..."gown-up"! Yah, I'm not so much.
With me, it's jewelry...especially necklaces. I had a few, very simple ones that I almost never wore. But then I got bit by the jewelry bug and started making my own. Except I never wore them. So when I started making some of the new ones (that I'm trying to sell) I started wearing them around to see what people thought.
It was awkward. I totally felt out of place, so I know what you mean. But then I got used to it. And now if I don't wear one, people say - hey, where's your necklace?
So maybe the trick is to keep doing it til it doesn't feel awkward anymore.

(This is where Otin would chime in with "yah, that's what she said." or some such! ha!) :)
