A DIFFERENT TWIST

Cooking is therapeutic for me. Some people clean, some chant, some drink, some meditate, still others exercise or read or pray. I pray and then I cook. Sometimes I pray that the cooking turns out OK. *sigh*

If you’ve been reading here the last few days, you know I’m in a bit of a funk lately so rather than subject you to my funkiness, I’m cooking.

Creating something new and different in the kitchen is a challenge for me. And if you know me at all, I’m always up for a challenge. (I’m watching D2 on the Wii as I write this and realize that I’m going to have to up my game if I want to remain a challenge to her.)

I love to take an ingredient and find ways to prepare it in a different and unexpected way. Such is the case with this recipe.

We love broccoli. The whole family loves broccoli. I think we might be some sort of phenomenon. Isn’t every family supposed to have that one picky eater that doesn’t like broccoli? In our family, the picky eater is D2. She doesn’t like pizza and hamburgers. If I didn’t know better, I would swear she was switched at birth.

About a year ago (or maybe a little longer) I discovered this in the store:

DSC03694 The idea is to make slaw out of the broccoli stalk shreds like you would make with cabbage. I had a different idea. I saute it with a little extra virgin olive oil, minced garlic, salt and pepper and just a dash of crushed red pepper. Oh, and sometimes, I throw in a little red pepper and some onion.

It’s a great, light vegetable dish and quite tasty too. Give it a try.

And as my grandmother used to say, “If you like it, tell others. If not, tell me.

Hugs,

Smart Mouth Broad

Said funk is still in working order. I was attempting to schedule this post for another day. But now that I've completely screwed up that plan, I figured, "What the hell!" Here it is, hope you enjoy it. I'm going to fix myself another glass of sangria.

Sangria works. I had never thought to saute the slaw. My family all eats brocoli, a word I've never been able to spell. Can't figure out why, but they do. I mix the slaw with golden raisins, small pieces of Granny Smith apples, and Sass Sesame Garlic dressing. Will try the cooking.

Oh I love it (minus garlic and onions but with sesame oil?) and I wish I could buy readymade like this, but anyway...yours and Amy's at Bitchin Wives are both good for vegetarians, and I love that ... it shows me you're very thoughtful to all your readers...thank you love :)

Well...it's ...pretty. I love broccoli but I doubt I will ever make it. Then again..it looks good..
You are still in your funk? Oh, now don't yell at me...I heard you...but..I was playing for time so maybe I could think of a way to get you out of your "funk"...

Hey Girl,
Thanks for the broccoli recipe. I will buy me a bag because I'm tired of the same old steamed broccoli.
Still in that funk?
Sorry to hear about it.
Damn hormones.
Have you tried calcium supplements?
I swear they saved me from going nuts during my "Life Change".
Feel better.
Miss you in Tweetsville.

Actually, I've used the shredded broccoli for stirfry as well, and I hardly ever cook but when I saw it in the grocery, thought it'd be a good idea and it was! Who have thought we'd see this product in the same light.

Hope you become funkless very soon.

Although I'm not a cook, that looks scrumptious!

Broccoli? Not so much. I am descended from a long line of fantastically discriminating eaters.

But I'm glad you are finding things that help you feel better. I get that. For me, it is laundry and sometimes cleaning, or cleaning out. (i.e. throwing stuff away or taking to Goodwill).

Hang in there. xxxooo

I'm starving now, thank you very little. Oh no, sorry, I haven't had breakfast or lunch, yet. My bad.
I will try this recipes, looks luscious and I love broccoli. I usually toss it cold with a little vinegar and olive oil. Hadn't thought of cooking it.
I am in a funk and love to cook to take my mind off of it, now I'm convinced we're soulmates!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Would go well with Tilapia
and spinach. Linda looked at your recipe for tilapia but she didn't run to the store to buy any yet.

Nothing like a Good Woman/Wife who COOKS!

There are Two things that I really get pleasure out of in life...

ONE of those things is eating good delicious food. Speaking of which, I need to get ready to go to Tripps.

I like the look of that slaw, never seen broccoli in that way here.

On a totally different note: I find the American word "slaw" interesting, because as far as I know there is no language closer than Dutch where is it used in that way... in Dutch "sla". English is 'salad', German 'salat' and French is 'salade'. It has been my long-time supsicion that the horrible American English accent largely originates from Dutch influences too *ducks*

That saying by your grandmother is the best. I am so going to steal that.

I also cook the Broccoli Slaw and put it in egg rolls yummy!

Ok.. i don't know if you've seen my reply to your reply on this reply my blog (for clarity sake) but as an afterthought... you're not saying that out of fear are you? Because my abusing loosely of your American English might aggravate things beyond repair and generations after us will be thinking that using the word "slaw" in any kind of salad situation is daily business.

Coleslaw (koolsla) is sooo Dutch.

That looks good.

I usually pray that my food comes out edible too.

darsden-Let me know what you think.

MLJH-Now your slaw sounds fabulous. I'll have to try it.

Braja-My neighbors/close friends are vegetarians so I always like to think up new meat free dishes. Due to my upbringing, I'm always adding a touch of meat or just stock even to the veggies tho. I'm baaaaaad.

Mona-No more funk. I just made up my mind.

Auntie-Damn hormones, indeed.

Jane-I think you're my mom. Check out my comment on DZ's site.

Lisa-This barely requires cooking. Try it.

Movie-No broccoli? Hmmmm? We can still be friends tho, right?

DZ-I just might have to try it with a little vinegar or lemon now that you mention it. Yum!

Joe-Hope you got my message before it's too late.

Wil-My place. It will take me awhile to get my passport. In the meantime, I will cook for you.

Jan-Well..........you could make me some ice cream.

Namaste-Let me know what you think if you try it.

Blase-Tripps? Is that that place on the other side of the tracks from RC?

thyme-Steal away. My grandmother would be flattered.

Delaney-Great idea. I usually buy my eggrolls takeout. I'm not that adventurous with Asian cuisine.

thyme-koolsla. Between you, Wil and Emily, I just might learn to speak Dutch before we know it.

WhisperingW-It is very good. Try it and let me know what you think. Thanks so much for visiting. I hope you'll come by again soon. I'm not always this cranky.

I can't remember how I got here now...somebody that writes a good blog, anyway. Just like you! I think the tilapia recipe got me. I will be back again soon. This is good stuff. Nice mix of food stories and your own point of view. I like it....

This looks like a fabulous dish. We are always looking for new ways to cook veggies. My daughter is pregnant again (on her third, due 12/10/09), and she is diabetic already so must go see an endocrinologist. But she would love this recipe too. I'll have to share it with her. Thanks!

That just looks delish. . . I'll have to try that at home. . .

Well, I'm sitting here, looking at your photos, mouth watering. I believe my family must be a lot like yours. (grin) We all like spinach, we love brussel sprouts, and we adore broccoli! (grin)

I'm going to try your recipe. It looks fabulous, and would fit into our new low glycemic index lifestyle. (grin)
