I MISS LUCY

i-love-lucy-slots

It’s been awhile since I’ve written a Lucy post. I can think of no better way to celebrate Mother’s Day here in SMBland than to talk about Lucy, my beloved mother who died a little over 5 years ago. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss her more and more. So many things have happened in our lives in the past five years and it breaks my heart that she couldn’t share them with us. I don’t know how this Heaven thing works but I believe there is one and I like to think that Lucy has box seats and is watching over us all.

Lucy was one of a kind. Everyone thought so. Everyone loved her. She was smart, beautiful, funny and took GOOFY to a whole new level. The goofiness is what I loved most about her.

Lucy was married for seventeen years to my siblings’ father before she married my dad. Daddy was eleven years younger than Lucy. The age difference was never noticeable until Lucy was in her 80s and got sick. She was always very young looking and could run circles around women many years her junior including me. She had so much energy.

My mother got a kick out of shocking people. I should mention that Lucy moved to our small town in Indiana when she married my father. I think it’s fair to say that many people just didn’t know what to make of her.

Lucy loved to tell people that when she got married, her husband was only 9 years old. Of course she was talking about when she married her first husband and saying that her second husband was nine. Sometimes she would explain, sometimes, she didn’t bother and would just leave them wondering. She also liked to say, “My husband was eleven years old when I had my first child.” You can imagine the reaction she would get. And she loved it.

God, I miss her.

I wish I'd known her but I'm grateful to know the daughter she so obviously raised to be a treasure that I was lucky enough to find.

MUAH to you, my friend and happy mother's day.

She did a fine job on raising you ; -) I know she is up there proud of all of you and watching over you.

Happy Mother's Day to you, SMB. Lucy sounds like she brought great life to those around her.

While I'm up...

Your parents age situation is exactly identical to mine and SB. If we live long enough, I'll be willing and ready to take care of her if it turns out that way.

As you can see, I can't sleep..... a quick comment here, and I am going to read your linked posts about Lucy tomorrow a.m. Oh wait a minute, it's already tomorrow a.m..... ACK.

I still have my mom, but it's been close to 3 years since we lost my dad and I think the same thoughts as you -- I got all teary just a few weeks ago as I thought how much he would have loved where I live now in KS. I wish I could have one of our famous family picnics here tomorrow, but alas, not possible even with the ones who are still on this beautiful earth.

Your mom sounds like a real firecracker. Daughters are usually closer to their moms, so my heart (and hugs) go out to you. I can't imagine not being able to talk to my mom several times a week.

But YOU are still a mom yourself, so Happy Mother's Day to you! :)

Hi SMB,
I just read all about Lucy. The story about her going to the hospice freaks me out. You endured what we all fear: Watching a slow and painful death of a parent.

And I agree w/ Oz Girl...your mom was a real fire cracker.

Girl that was a lovely tribute to your Lucy!! I posted about my Mom as well today. She died in 1977 and I still miss her to this very day. It gets better with time, but it never totally goes away, you know?
Wishing you a Mother's Day filled with much love, joy and laughter and.......

Wow, with a mother like Lucy, you didn't need anyone else to make your day!

So glad you found solace at the beach and hope you're mending.

Sometimes, when you write about Lucy, the only thing I can think is that our mothers would have been BFF if they'd ever met. SO much in common. I always think that I would love to have met her - the way you describe her, I feel like I have missed out on something wonderful by not knowing her myself.

And have a Happy Mother's Day yourself, hon. (((SMB)))

I love Lucy. I wish I had known her. We would have had a lot in common. I always said, of my last husband, Where had he been all my life? Growing up. There are 16 years between us. And I do like to embarrass my daughters. Sorry, but I do. I think you are probably a whole lot like your mom, given that smart mouth of yours. :)

Happy Mom's Day. It's a great time to remember the ladies we've loved and lost.

I love reading your Lucy stories.

Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day. I always find them quite somber since Mom passed...I know exactly how you are feeling.

Love to you!

what a great way to remember your mom.... telling the world how amazing she was. i can't imagine losing my mom and i would rather go before her, being selfish and all. i'm sure lucy is out there, smiling away at how loving her daughter is.
